Family context
The Ellisons are in a transition year. Maya's father moved to a Singapore role in June and is now away four weeks out of six. Her mother runs all scheduling and asked to keep sessions inside the school week, which rules out the weekend slots Daniel usually offers.
"I need it predictable. If it moves around week to week, it won't happen. That's just being honest with you."
Student profile
Maya is a strong writer reading well above grade level, and she is the first to say she is bad at maths. Her transcript does not support that self-assessment: she held a B+ in Algebra II through a term in which she missed eleven classes. The belief is doing more damage than the gap it describes.
"I'm just not a maths person. I got through Algebra but I was basically guessing by the end."
Learning needs
The gap is not conceptual, it is pace under timed conditions. She reaches correct answers when given room and stalls when the clock is visible. Two things follow: timed practice has to be introduced gradually rather than used as a diagnostic, and accuracy should be tracked separately from speed so progress stays legible to her.
"If we score her on both at once she'll read every result as failure. We split them, and she sees one line going up while the other holds."
Strategy
Two tracks in parallel through autumn. Rebuild timed confidence in maths without naming it as remediation, and use her writing as the anchor that keeps sessions positive. Reassess in six weeks, before applications close in.
Instructions for the tutor
- 01 Do not open with a diagnostic test. Maya reads assessment as judgement and will disengage in the first session.
- 02 Start each session in writing, where she is confident, and move to quantitative work in the final third.
- 03 Hold sessions to 50 minutes. She fades sharply after that and the last ten minutes cost more than they return.
"Past about fifty minutes she's just sitting there. She won't say she's done, she'll just stop taking anything in."
Risks
Maya's stated goal and her mother's stated goal are not the same goal, and neither has said this out loud to the other. Maya named Brown. Her mother described a school within driving distance. Do not attempt to resolve this in session. Flag it to Elisabeth if it surfaces.
"She hasn't heard me say this, but I'd like her closer to home. We haven't had that conversation yet."
Next steps
- →Meet-and-greet with Daniel, 18 Aug, 4pm ET.
- →Writing sample requested from Maya before the first session.
- →Confirm the weekday slot with the mother before the rate is set.
